Tips for the Beginning Woodworker
When beginning woodworking, most will tell you to start making small and simple projects, but I don't agree. I think you should learn and practice the art of joinery. You may ask what the art of joinery is. Joinery is when you attach two pieces of wood together to function as one piece. There is not much you can make that does not require some kind of wood joint. Some of the joints are a must when woodworking. These are a few wood joints you need to learn about, butt joints, dado, miter, box joints, rabbets and pocket screws and the classic dove tails. These wood joints are used in many wood projects and you need to learn when and where to use them.
Then go to Lowe's or Home Depot and ask to see if they have any cull lumber or lumber that is damaged at a reduced price, 1x works best for practice. Once you have learned how to make a few joint, you can start on your small projects. Nothing more discouraging than finishing your first project and throw it away because of bad joints. I would suggest buying a book or two on wood joinery. It will be less than the cost of wood you will throw out. You can check out our JOINERY PAGE to help understand about these joints.

After pricing a few and looking at some reviews, then decide if you want to use hand saw or a power saw or even a table saw. Then you need a good tape measure and a good square. Tip on the square, get one from an office supply store, the plastic drafting square there easy to lie out and mark wood with and are more accurate. Next you need to pick the tools you will need for the type of wood joints you’re going to use, if you've seen our wood joinery page you should have an ideal of what tools you will need. Now what type of glue you’re going to use? I like to use Titebond, it’s a good yellow glue and bonds well I think you will like it. It comes in several grades so read the label to find one that will work for you. Now it’s time to clamp it up; this is one item you will need a lot of. There are a lot of styles and sizes to pick from, try to get ones that can be used for different projects that you want to do. But to start, buy what you need for this project, you can build up as you go, whatever tools you buy, always read the safety manual.
So let’s recap, you need a saw, tape measure, square, tools to make the joint you want, glue, clamps (4 or more).
Let’s not forget eye and hearing protection.
The more you can do by hand the better you will be at woodworking. Remember the skill is in the woodworker not the tools.
